Welcome to the Respiratory System Module. During this week you will be exploring the physiology of our lungs and how gas exchange occurs in the lungs and at the tissues. Below are the learning objectives you should focus on during this week:

Distinguish between upper and lower respiratory tract
Describe the structures and functions of the following:
- nasal cavity
- pharynx
- epiglottis
- larynx
- trachea
- bronchi & bronchioles
- alveoli (Type I & Type II Cells),
- lobes of lungs,
- parietal and visceral pleura,
- diaphragm,
- intercostal muscles
Explain how air is inspired and exhaled and its relationship to Boyle's law (pressure and ventilation) - Volume and Pressure are inversely related which directly impacts our respiration.
Summarize the control centers for breathing
Define the different lung volumes used for determining lung health and capacity
Discuss how levels of carbon dioxide, pH, and oxygen influence the respiratory rate
Explain how oxygen is transported in the blood, and how pH and temperature affect hemoglobin
Interpret an oxygen hemoglobin dissociation curve (oxygen saturation on hemoglobin and how it is impacted by temp, pH, etc)
Explain how carbon dioxide is transported in the blood (3 methods)
Explain how oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged in the capillaries of the lungs and tissues and impacted by factors such as exercise, pH, temperature, etc.
